The ProjectEASY-C was a research project co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), which have been jointly led by Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Fettweis at the Vodafone Chair Mobile Communications Systems, Technische Universität Dresden, as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Communications, Heinrich-Hertz Institute (HHI).The aim of the research in EASY-C was to develop key technologies for the next generation of cellular networks in order to enable new broad-band applications such as video streaming and location-based services. EASY-C's approach was to address the challenging requirements of such applications towards spectral efficiency, latency and fairness by using innovative multi-antenna techniques and multi-cell cooperative techniques such as relaying, interference coordination and cancellation. From theoretical research, it was already well-known that such techniques are the key to significantly increased spectral efficiencies and improved system fairness, but EASY-C was the first project world-wide in which cellular testbed were built for implementing and testing these innovative techniques in practice. In 2010 EASY-C has been finished sucessfully. A lot of research results were published by the project partners and are going to impact future standardisation activities on cellular networks.
